Renewable Fuels

Fueling Middle America with Clean Energy

As a leading supplier and transporter of renewable fuels including ethanol, biofuels, and biodiesel, Waterford is helping the United States achieve energy independence, a healthier environment, and higher employment rates.

Supporting the Renewable March Forward

Waterford Oil is helping local and regional fuel retailers and commercial/industrial end users adopt clean energy products in support of the renewable march forward for many good reasons.

The Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) program established under the Energy Policy Act (EPAct) began the march toward greater reduction of foreign oil energy dependence. The Energy Independence and Security Act set a production and distribution goal of 36 billion gallons of renewable fuel by 2022. The agency bases its policies on scientific and economic research that shows renewable fuels will:

  • Add more than $1.7 trillion to our Gross Domestic Product between 2008 and 2022
  • Reduce greenhouse gasses
  • Reduce dependence on foreign oil

Additionally, the use of renewables supports the launch and growth of homegrown companies and creates more energy sector jobs here at home. Waterford Oil champions this initiative by offering a flexible supply and distribution solution for renewables from biodiesel to ethanol blends for on-road and off-road vehicles and equipment.

State Mandate Periods

Please review the following links on Minnesota policies.

Minnesota is a national leader in ethanol policy and development. It was the first state to mandate the use of ethanol in our fuel supply and today state law requires that all gasoline sold in Minnesota contain 10 percent biofuel – the biofuel being exclusively ethanol.

Currently, the Minnesota Department of Agriculture requires 10% biodiesel to be blended with #2 diesel fuel from April 1 to September 30 each year, with the blend lowered to B5 for the colder weather months of October through March. The statute now reads that the mandate would move to B20 on May 1, 2018. Implementation of the B10 mandate was delayed until July 1, 2014 due to inadequate blending infrastructure in the southwestern area of the state, and inadequate regulatory protocol for Minnesota Weights and Measures enforcement. Both of those obstacles were determined to have been overcome in the summer of 2013, and B10 was implemented in 2014.

According to state statute, the requirements for B10 and B20 are only be effective during the summer months (April through September). In winter, the mandate will revert back to 5 percent unless state officials and technical experts determine that accepted federal standards deem certain higher blends as suitable for year-round use in Minnesota. In addition, before implementing blending requirements of B10 and B20, state officials must ensure that a variety of conditions are met including sufficient fuel and/or feedstock supply, adequate blending infrastructure, and the existence of federal standards for mandated blends.*
